The area code 0808 appearing on your phone does not guarantee the caller is actually in Freephone. Scammers routinely fake (spoof) caller ID to display a local or trusted number. Always verify the identity of any unexpected caller independently before taking action.

🛡️ Staying safe with unexpected calls
- Never share passwords, PINs or one-time codes over the phone — your bank, HMRC, or any legitimate organisation will never ask for these.
- Never send money based on a request from an unexpected caller, even if they claim to be from your bank or the police.
- Hang up and call back using the official number from the organisation's website — not the number that called you and not a number they give you during the call.
- Take your time — genuine callers will not pressure you to make immediate decisions or payments.
- Report scam calls to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or at actionfraud.police.uk, and to Ofcom by texting the number to 7726 (free).
