Caller ID can be spoofed
The area code 01 appearing on your phone does not guarantee the caller is actually in this area. Scammers routinely fake (spoof) caller ID to display a local or trusted number. Always verify the identity of any unexpected caller independently before taking action.

🛡️ Staying safe with unexpected calls
- Never share passwords, PINs or one-time codes over the phone — your bank, HMRC, or any legitimate organisation will never ask for these.
- Never send money based on a request from an unexpected caller, even if they claim to be from your bank or the police.
- Hang up and call back using the official number from the organisation's website — not the number that called you and not a number they give you during the call.
- Take your time — genuine callers will not pressure you to make immediate decisions or payments.
- Report scam calls to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or at actionfraud.police.uk, and to Ofcom by texting the number to 7726 (free).
